To kick off September and the new season, it’s a good time to give your home a seasonal refresh. Fall brings cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and the excitement of decorating your home for a cozy season.

Here is a fall to-do list to get you started:

1. Schedule HVAC Service

Before cooler weather hits and you need to rely on your heating system, make sure it is prepared. Professionals will inspect, clean, and test the essential components of your heating system, helping eliminate costly issues in the future. Keep the space around the furnace clear to prevent fire hazards.

2. Test Alarms

Each season change is a good reminder to test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Replace batteries as needed and follow replacement recommendations. The US National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years, and carbon monoxide alarms every 7 years.

3. Inspect Skirting

Manufactured home skirting is essential for energy efficiency, protection from weather, and pests. Look for any cracks, dents, or holes along the skirting of your home before small problems become bigger ones. Keep skirting vents clear of debris and adjust properly according to the season. Opening vents during the summer maximizes ventilation and prevents moisture buildup; closing them blocks freezing air and prevents pipes from freezing.

4. Clean Gutters & Downspouts

Summer debris and falling leaves can quickly build up in your gutters. Clean your gutters regularly and check your downspouts to ensure water flows away from your home. If you suspect a blockage in your downspout, gently tap the side of the downspout from top to bottom, listening for a hollow or muffled sound. It is important that water isn’t pooling near your home’s foundation or skirting, which can cause damage.

5. Check Windows and Doors

Check your windows and doors for gaps, alignment, and water damage. Test windows and doors by simply opening and closing them. If they don’t latch properly, they may need maintenance. Look for cracked or peeling caulk around frames and trim. Avoid higher energy costs by addressing these issues before cold weather arrives.

6. Look for Cracks and Leaks

Check inside and outside of your home for potential cracks, water stains, or signs of leaks. Be on the lookout for bubbling paint in the ceiling corners. You can also gently push on areas, such as beneath windows, to find soft spots from hidden leaks.

7. Inspect Roofing

Take a look at your roof for any signs of cracks, tears, or missing shingles. If you notice anything concerning, have it looked at by a professional. Having it looked at now can prevent weather-related problems in the cooler months.

8. Tidy Indoor Spaces

Fall is the perfect time for a refresh. Deep clean, organize, and switch out summer decor for fall candles and cozy blankets. Halloween may be a month away, but who says it’s too early to decorate?

9. Refresh Outdoor Spaces

Outdoor spaces can still be enjoyed into fall. Clear away leaves or summer debris, tidy up the garden, and put away summer items. Give your porch or outdoor area a seasonal refresh with a fall wreath, pumpkins, or seasonal plants.

10. Prepare for the Season Ahead

Fall is a good time to take care of any projects or maintenance before colder temperatures arrive. Walk through your home and make a list of any projects you have been putting off. Taking care of a few items now can ease stress in the future.
